Sugar

General Information

The desire for something sweet is one of man's basic needs and sugar is an important source of energy. As a quickly available carbohydrate, it increases performance during physical exertion and sports activities. Sugar is extracted from sugar beets, which are grown in Central Europe, as well as from tropical sugar cane. Sucrose is contained as a substance directly in these cultivated fruits and is extracted by boiling them down to aqueous solutions, which are boiled down even further until crystals settle out. Depending on the desired level of purity, the sugar is repeatedly clarified and crystallized. In addition to the "coarse" sugar crystals in general use, many domestic and industrial applications require the much finer form of sugar, i.e. powdered sugar. This fine sugar is produced by means of mechanical comminution of sugar crystals on modern impact mills.

CUM Universal Mill

Using the CUM Universal Mill, the granulated sugar required for the product formulation is ground into powdered sugar. In the so-called blast mill mode, crushing is carried out with a high air flow rate. The productive efficiency of the grinding system and the gentle product handling are the outstanding advantages of the CUM Universal Mill. Depending on the desired end fineness, models with capacities of from 250 to 15,000 kg h-1 are available. Various explosion-proof models safeguard the grinding plant against the danger of a dust explosion. For directly subsequent conditioning of the finely-ground powdered sugar, large-scale sugar tanks, which can be integrated into the grinding plant, are available for intermediate storage.

CSM Classifier Mill

Some special applications for powdered sugar require product qualities with the maximum grinding fineness. Thanks to the integrated classifier wheel, achieving such qualities is no problem with the CSM Classifier Mill. Grinding finenesses of down to 5 µm (d90) can be produced with this technology. Due to the high air flow rate in the mill, correspondingly gentle processing of the product at a low temperature is guaranteed.

CHM Hammer Mill

The CHM Hammer Mill is used for the production of coarser sugar. This machine can achieve product finenesses of 300 – 500 µm, i.e. coarser than commercially-available powdered sugar, but finer than the highest quality granulated sugar. And it does it with a low dust content, which is problematic for some applications. Machine sizes are available for maximum throughput rates – of course also in an explosion-proof design!
