يُعد الخلط واحد من العمليات الأساسية فى هندسة المعالجة الميكانيكية. وفى إطار ذلك، هناك على الأقل مادتين أوليتين مجتمعتين في مادة واحدة ينبغي أن تكونا متجانستين قدر الإمكان.

 

عملية الخلط عادةً ما تكون متبوعة بنزع الهواء خلال تحويل السائل الى منتجات ذات لزوجة عالية، وغالبا ما تتسبب جيوب الهواء أو الغاز في مشاكل. فجيوب الهواء، وبالتالي الأوكسجين، يمكن أن يكون لها تأثيرات سلبية على المنتج - مثل الأكسدة، نتنة الدهون أو الزيوت، زوال اللون أو تفسخ الرائحة والطعم على سبيل المثال- بالنسبة للمواد المراد طليها، من الممكن أن تودى إلى أسطح مسامية ومثقبة. فى المقابل، المنتجات التي تمت نزع هوائها عادة ما تكون أكثر ثباتا من الناحية الكيميائية وأكثر ديمومة.
