In biotechnology, knowledge of biology, biochemistry, microbiology and process engineering is used to produce specific substances with new production methods, for example, in bioreactors with the aid of microorganisms. For example, a mechanical means of extracting substances is cell disruption. Here biologically active intracellular components such as proteins, amino acids and enzymes are isolated and extracted by breaking through the cell wall of a microorganism. Agitator bead mills are especially suited for gentle cell disruption.
