Conductive Additives and Battery Slurries

The majority of active materials are oxides with limited electrical conductivity. That is why additives that reduce the required charging time of the battery are added to the battery slurries. Here it is primarily the carbon-based raw materials that are used, such as carbon black, graphite and carbon nano tubes (CNT), which should be characterized by the highest possible aspect ratio.

The materials must first be carefully dispersed or delaminated in preliminary stages. Here the size of the primary particles, the properties of the bulk solids and the purity requirements usually present particular challenges, which NETZSCH solves with the Epsilon, Omega® and the s-Jet®.

Battery Slurries

PMH planetary mixers have established themselves as state of the art for the production of so-called battery slurries. Via the planetary mixer's rotating tool system, the conductive carbon black agglomerates can be broken up or active materials can be dry processed in an intensive kneading phase.

However, depending on the material system used, the binder can also be dissolved first and very gently mixed after addition of the active materials. To prevent defects in the coating due to gas inclusions, the mixing process is typically carried out under a vacuum. This way, pockets of air that have entered via the raw materials can be removed from the product.

The key aspects for selection of the PMH planetary mixer are the excellent temperature control and the broad viscosity range for which this machine is suited.

Grinding System Zeta® - formerly LMZ

The Zeta® grinding system is, in every respect, a user friendly, low-maintenance and very reliable grinding system.

Successful dispersion requires targeted force in order to separate agglomerated particles. The Omega® Economic Disperser applies dispersive forces then and there, where they are especially effective: in the Omega® disperser body, energy is transformed into very high speeds under pressure.

CGS Fluidized Bed Jet Mill

The combination of an air jet mill and a dynamic air classifier represent fine dry grinding in perfection. The highest of final finenesses with an exact maximum particle size limitation become reproducible. The development of the new e-Jet® and s-Jet® grinding methods constantly yields new, interesting areas of application, both economically and technically. Applicable for finenesses from 1 to 70 µm (d97).

Machine sizes available for grinding air volumes from approx. 50 to 12,000 Nm³/h.

s-Jet® Steam Jet Mill

The s-Jet® System (patent pending) is a new innovation in a line of consistent developments being made in the area of air jet milling. Final finenesses in the submicron range (example: d50 0.2 µm) can now be achieved with fluidized bed jet mills. As opposed to conventional dry grinding processes with fluidized bed jet mills, the s-Jet® System uses superheated steam as its milling gas.

Epsilon Inline Disperser

With the Epsilon, NETZSCH offers a new, compact solution for producing homogeneous dispersionswith reproducible quality in an inline process. Here, the dispersion process takes place in an atmospherically sealed processing chamber and is thus dust and emission free.

PMH / PML Planetary Mixing and Kneading Machines

The NETZSCH planetary mixing and kneading machines show their true magnitude with difficult-to-disperse products and high viscosities. In particular, dispersion of finely-powdered and lightweight components in liquids is accomplished extremely quickly with product-specific mixing elements such as crossbeam and butterfly agitators or various dispersion disks.
